The currency of Venezuela is the Bolivar, with one Bolivar equalling 100 centinos. Notes come in denominations of Bs50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5000, 2000, 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of Bs500, 100, 50, 25, 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10 and 5 centimos. Currency can be exchanged in most hotels, banks and bureau de changes. Traveller’s cheques are accepted widely, though it is advisable to take them in US Dollars to avoid additional conversion charges. ATMs are widely available, and major international credit and debit cards are accepted. Business General banking hours in most areas are from 0830 to 1530 Mondays to Fridays. Shopping hours vary, but are generally from 0900 to 1300 and 1500 to 1900 Mondays to Saturdays. Usual customs should be observed when in Venezuela. Formal wear is expected of business encounters, and a handshake or abrazo – a handshake/half hug – is the normal greeting. Tipping is usually ten percent of restaurant and hotel bills. Taxi drivers are normally tipped for helping with bags, and porters/bellboys and the like are also tipped normally.
