Whilst much media coverage of the problems in Venezuela is exaggerated, street crime is something of a problem in the country – especially in Caracas. Vigilance and common sense are vital, as is listening to the advice of the friendly locals who make up the vast majority. Remote regions near the Colombian border should be avoided, as Colombian guerrillas operate in the areas. Political demonstrations are fairly common in the country and should be avoided, as they have been known to descend into violence. Vaccination against typhoid, cholera and certain other diseases may be required before travel – check with a doctor before travelling. Bilharzias is present in the north of the country, meaning fresh water should not be swam or paddled in. Water should be boiled or otherwise sterilised before consumption, or bottled water should be purchased instead.
